Guide to medical services in Japan
Finding English-speaking Doctors
- AMDA Medical Information Service: Use AMDA’s medical information service to find English-speaking medical facilities.
- International Departments: Major hospitals in metropolitan areas often have international departments with staff who can assist in English and other languages.
- Embassy-affiliated Medical Institutions: Consider medical institutions affiliated with embassies or international clinics, which often cater to the needs of expatriates and offer multilingual support.
Hospital Procedures
- Required Items: Bring your insurance card, residence card, and cash for payment. Some hospitals may accept credit cards, but it’s always best to have cash on hand.
- First-time Visits: First-time visits require registration and medical history forms. Be prepared to fill out these forms or provide the necessary information.
- Non-emergency Cases: Many hospitals operate on a first-come, first-served basis for non-emergency cases. It’s advisable to arrive early, especially at larger hospitals.
Emergency Services
- Ambulance Services: Call 119 for ambulance services. English support is available, so you can explain your emergency and location.
- Emergency Hospital Schedule: Keep your ward’s emergency hospital schedule handy. This schedule will help you know which hospitals are designated for emergency care on specific days and times.
- After-hours Clinics: After-hours clinics are available in most cities for non-emergency care. These clinics can provide medical services outside of regular hospital hours and can be a good option for urgent but non-life-threatening issues.
Additional Information
- Pharmacies: Pharmacies (薬局) are usually located near hospitals and clinics. Present your prescription and health insurance card for reduced costs. Some pharmacies also have English-speaking staff.
- Mental Health Services: Mental health services are available, though finding English-speaking professionals may require extra effort. Organizations like TELL Japan provide counseling and support in English.
- Medical Interpretation: If you need an interpreter, some hospitals offer medical interpretation services. Alternatively, you can hire a private interpreter to assist you during medical visits.
